Monte Sano Calls. Before embarking on my “In Search of Fall Foliage” road trip to Northern Alabama in November of 2011, I did a lot of research. There were many gorgeous waterfalls in the northwestern part of the state and some glorious vistas in northeastern part of the state, but what caught my eye while going through photos online was a medium-sized park in Huntsville, Alabama called Monte Sano. Of course the photos that I found online had those glorious autumn colors and that fantastic mysterious fog that I love, and they were taken in November, so I assumed (or rather hoped with silly optimism) that when I got there, I’d spend a week in foggy autumnal bliss. I got the autumnal bliss part, but I only had a few hours on my last day to capitalize on foggy goodness.
The photo Monte Sano Calls wasn’t actually taken in Monte Sano, but on the road leading up to it. Building off of my last post about the photo To Somewhere, oftentimes it’s not about the destination, but about the road leading somewhere, anywhere. While Monte Sano was indeed beautiful, my favorite photos and my favorite moments happened while taking side streets and random paths as I made my way to the park.
I chose Monte Sano Calls as my #4 photo on my The Ones I Like List of 2012 because it’s what I do and its what makes me happy — autumnal fog photography. And I think this is a great example of why I do it. There’s magic in it. Just being there in it. Even without the camera. There’s magic.
