In Restless Dreams He Walked Alone. I just realized that this is my second photo in the Top 10 with a title that comes from or is inspired by Simon and Garfunkel’s song “The Sound of Silence.” Odd. I don’t imagine that I’ve done that with any other song. I guess it’s a hat tip to the incredible songwriting skills of Paul Simon.
I don’t often include people in my personal work. Quite frankly, most of my photography is of foggy landscapes early in the morning. Not many people out in the fog at 7 a.m..
But you know who is out in the fog just before sunrise? When the street lamps are still illuminated and the sound is largely one of silence? The mystery man in the bow tie, that’s who. He with an unbuttoned dinner jacket and a steady stride. He who walks under the raised arms of rooted giants and who thinks nothing of the woman with the camera entering into his line of vision.
Twice this year I ended up with people in my fog photos, and both times I was thrilled about it. There is something about the randomness of In Restless Dreams He Walked Alone that I’m particularly drawn to — a slightly surreal quality that I love. Although it is one of my more recent photos, it is definitely one of my favorites of the past year. And as of this right now, it comes in at #3.
The second fog photo that I took in 2012 that featured people was The Strangers. It narrowly missed making my Top 10 list. You can see it below.
