deer xing. Lady Luck plays a huge role in my life as a photographer. I always say that photography found me, gave me a huge wave, and has allowed me to ride that wave for almost six years now, carrying me to wonderful “places” along the way. In 2010 one of those wonderful places was a smallish corporate complex near my parents’ house. The complex, although in a bustling suburban area about 30 minutes from downtown Houston, lies in the middle of nature country – pines, oaks, bayous, etc. It was a foggy morning (my favorite kind!), and I was driving to U of H, Clear Lake when I spotted some deer on the complex lawn. It was a weekend, so I just drove into the parking lot and fired away. I ended up with numerous deer photos that day, but this one was certainly my luckiest. The deer didn’t have to walk into the “deer xing” zone (although all the cool deer do it!), and it certainly didn’t have to pause there. But it did. And I was ready for it.
This photo also represents my experiment with muted tones in 2010. I’m so used to bold colors, that once I figured out how to create these pale and dreamy scenes, I found it refreshing, and I ran with it. Clearing, a photo (below) that just missed the ten spot in this countdown, also employed the muted aesthetic. As did the photo (also below) not content to settle, he made his way and was the better for it.
