the dog days of autumn – Dogs run through fountains. They do. And they love it. Kids run through fountains, too. Sometimes. When allowed. It’s just we, the self-conscious, the adults…it’s just we who tend to deprive ourselves of life’s little pleasures when we deem them “age inappropriate.”
On that note, I’m so thankful to be a photographer. Photography is youthful. And, by influence, photographers tend to follow suit. Oh, sure, faint smile lines creep up in one’s thirties, but that’s not the youthfulness I’m talking about. I’m talking about a purity of ideas, judgment in its infancy, colors, shapes, dizzying excitement. I’m talking about enthusiasm that comes from stopping time. From creating stories and preserving memories.
I’m talking about joy.
I chose the dog days of autumn because it’s where my heart lies. It’s that dog that runs through the fountain because it’s fun… and because “why not?” It’s that no-censor mentality that rocks the same tune that photography does. If all goes well in 2010, I’ll be “running through fountains” everyday. With camera and without.
Picking only ten photos for this year’s The Ones I Like List proved to be quite difficult. I’ve really grown attached to the 2009 portfolio, more so than some other years. Four photos that narrowly missed the top ten were south street on a misty morning, snowy houston, some place far from home and natural.
