The Ones I Like List of 2007 – A Countdown [#9]

Space and duration are one.

-Edgar Allen Poe

Pier Review, Part III – 30 seconds changes things. Waves rhythmically crashing against reinforced wood only hum when averaged out over 30 seconds. At 30 seconds, a usually stoic pier cowers at the glass floor surrounding it. People move from point A to point B to point C and never once think that the world has stopped, that they have become nothing more than a transition…at 30 seconds. There is a truth at thirty seconds that isn’t there at one moment in time — a truth that is borne out by one click. Our camera is our truth serum.

This year I discovered the beauty of a tripod and, more importantly, the wonder of long-exposure photography. As a photographer, if I’m taking one thing into 2008, I’m taking that – 30 seconds. Pier Review, Part III is not my favorite long-exposure photograph of the year (another yet to come!), but it does represent the catagory for me. I have at least ten photos of the Hermosa Beach Pier, all long-exposure, that I created as a set. Each image has its own personality, but they are all linked by both space and time. You can see two other photos in the Pier Review collection here and here.
