dreamscape

Every so often I find myself conversing with a stranger about photography, and, inevitably, I am asked which type of photography is my specialty. I’ve done (and enjoyed!) almost every kind of photography, save maybe product photography, and I can’t really say that I specialize in one genre over the next. Sure, I’ve done portraits, but am I a portrait photographer? No. Yes, I’ve done fine art photography, but am I an artiste? I think not. Photojournalism? Done it. Photojournalist? No. You see where I’m going.

I’m a photographer. I’m not constrained by genre, nor am I keen to define myself as a specialist in any one particular area. I do, however, have a certain feel to many of my photographs. Whether a photo of a flower girl’s shoes or a snowy tree-lined sidewalk, I tend to lean towards the “dreamy” in my presentation. Maybe it’s because I have an escapist’s sensibility. Maybe it’s because I like the creation of story. I’m not certain. I just know that every once in a while I’ll take a photo from my archives, a photo that I had on previous occasion overlooked, and I’ll see something magical in it. Take for instance the above photo, dreamscape, it was originally taken in February of this year. While I did very much like the original photo, I can’t say that it really struck a chord with me, considering that I had many similar photos in my archives. Consequently, it was relegated to my shoddy archival system and left for dead. Today, however, a potential client’s request for an old photo necessitated that I go back through my archives. Upon doing so, I stumbled across the dreamscape in its non-dreamy form. Feeling creative, I thought I’d take a crack at creating something. I thought I’d take a moment to escape.

Have you every wondered about the evolution of an image? I have. As a matter of fact, I’m always curious what my photographic inspirations are doing to make their photographs come alive with fantasy, storytelling. Well, today, I’ll show you the before and after of my image, dreamscape. Below, you will find the original photograph. You’ll see the what kind of cosmetic surgery was applied to “bring in the magic,” and, hopefully, you’ll find a morsel of inspiration in your next adventure with post-processing.
