I have a general category of photography that I like to call “Whims of Change.” These are my photos that have textures and hyper-saturation. They are not intended to be literal representations of nature, but nuggets for the imagination. They are no more a product of my camera than my cat’s dinner is. They are born out of hyperbole and stubbornness, and an absolute refusal to “quit” on an otherwise unmemorable photo.
Speaking of unmemorable photos, many of my fog photos start that way. When fog is particularly thick, my camera is no better than anyone else’s. But that’s when things get fun for me. What others might see as trash bin fodder, I see as my next project. One can see that in viewing the before (original “as shot” image) and after of my latest photo, just a little orange. The photo was taken at Discovery Green on a particularly soupy morning. I’ll start with the “after.”

I always tell new photographers who are learning Photoshop to have patience with their photos, to find the “image” in the photo and then make it happen. That’s what I (try to) do. I hope this inspires someone starting out to do the same. And now for the original photo, straight from the camera, without the color work, four tree bark textures, selective highlights, square crop, vignetting and brightness boost.
